Caravans past and present

Sprite Alpine circa 1969
(not our actual van)

I thought in this post I would write about some of the caravans we have owned.

Many years ago we started off with a 10ft sprite 400, we thought it was wonderful as it
was our first van, our son was only a baby and off we would go along with our Cocker Spaniel 'Shane' (not named by us I will add he was a rescue dog). Thinking about it now it seemed quite a small area to sleep cook wash etc but we loved it.
This van had the old gas lamps as did others we had later, a Sprite Alpine and a Thompson. Our
daughter was always a bit frightened of these lamps and hated the smell of them when lit, she was a lot happier when we finally went 'modern' and got a van with electric which was the ABI Monza.

Right: Thompson circa 1975
(not our actual van)

There was, of course the old foot pump too for water, many times I would come home from a holiday with leg ache from stamping for a
ges on this rubber pump on the floor to get a tiny amount of water in the kettle to wash up, it was often much easier to just pour it from a container. Later on we could flick a switch which was battery operated, though as I remember this wasn't a lot quicker. Ah the good old days......no thank you, though I do have some really good memories, give me my modern van any day.

A caravan we
bought around 1994 was a 1985 Ace Quartz, this was our first 'modern' caravan, being 16ft it was the roomiest so far it even had proper taps
(no more leg work). It cost us quite a bit of money at the time and turne
d out to be the dampest van we have ever purchased. When we got it home there was a bit of damp in the front locker, but on further inspection some of the wood had become rotten but we replaced this. With hindsight maybe we ought to have taken it back as soon as it was noticed but we liked the layout and inside everything was pristine. Contrary to what people say that you can smell if a caravan is damp.....not in this case.
Brian the budgie was a regular traveller with us along with the our two dogs at that time Amber and Holly, It served us well, until we sold it in 2003.

We then pushed the boat out and bought the 1999 Abbey GTS Vogue, which we got very excited, about, never having had one this new before. It had proper blown heating, an end bathroom with flushing toilet and was the first van which had a shower (what luxury!) This is when we started caravanning all year round on a regular basis, the children had flown the nest and we replaced our free time by going on our travels.
The vogue had an L shape
d lounge which gave a nice feel of space this was a really lovely van and we were sad to part with it but we had set our minds on a fixed bed and there was no turning back.

Below: A short stop for lunch at Clumber Park

So in May 2007 we fell in love with and bought our Bailey Pageant Burgundy. Never having a new van before we wondered if we were doing the right thing but three and years on know it was th
e right move. The luxury of the fixed bed with a sprung mattress means no more shuffling around with cushions and a good nights sleep, a lay in with a cuppa in the morning while hubby walks the dog
( as you can see I've got it worked out well). The under bed space is useful storage for all manner of items, Chairs, Windbreaks etc. and because there is access from outside, doubles up as Al's beer cellar whilst on site.

This caravan is 18.2 ft inside 23.7ft total length, so it is quite roomy, it h
as lots of storage space, a toilet and shower cubical, plus a heating system which is very efficient and enables us to go away in all weathers. there is also a full size cooker with four ring hob and up above built in microwave. All in all we are really pleased with it and are not looking to replace it for a long time.

The Saga Outlaws

Click on pics to enlarge

We are a group of young at heart, friends who meet up
several times a year there are six couples, The Moggies, The Arnies, Tosh and Dawn, Jan and Zuff, Peg and Bo and me and Big Al, there are also the dogs Sammy and Lucy, not forgetting Saga pet pal's who have gone to 'Rainbow bridge' Holly, Billy and Rea.

We are all friends from way back, some o
f us went to school together, and through one thing and another we met up again after many many years and found we all had the same interest in caravanning. Our first meet was in August 2003 at Rutland Caravan site, near Oakham, followed by another at Smeetons Lakes, Newark, Lincs, this was the start of the 'Saga outlaws'. The name was just plucked out of the air by Zuff and it has stuck. 'Saga' because we are in our senior years and 'Outlaws' because in the 70's most of us were, 'rockers/greasers' with leather jackets, torn jeans and the lads used to ride motor bikes.
I think we had visions of running away, joining a hells angels chapter, and living forever without a care ............Oh happy days!

On the first few meets Jan and Zuff had a tent but, after having to thaw Jan out during a few chilly meets, they soon turned to the comforts of a van.

Tosh and Daw
n have a V.W Camper which is like a tardis, when they get on site it's like a magic trick, I will never know how they fit so much stuff in that Van. Dawn looks after injured animals and birds and it's a common thing for her to bring one of her latest patients to nurse while she is away.

Our main get together is May bank holiday weekend when we all meet up, and then we have get togethers through the year when, whoever can make it goes.
There have been
some themed meets; Pirates, where we hired a narrowboat for the day, Cowboys and Indians, this was at a Steam Rally for Jan's 50th. Halloween where we all went on a ghost train. We have got very sloshed at a Beer festival and had a Conker tournament at Houghton Mill, Cambs (Pauls 50th). Been on Ghost walks in Stratford and Nottingham, Cycling in Derby's, done Archery in Leics and had a weekend at the flower festival in Spalding. one of our favourite pastimes seems to be seeking out real ale pubs in the areas where we stay.

If we can and the site allows it we will gather wood and have a camp fire, then out comes Zuff's guitar and we have a sing song, Peg likes to play her tamborine and sing, let's just say she has her own style and leave it there!!!!

We often go on walks usually there is a pub en route, last year were nearly shot at by an angry farmer when we took the wrong path and dared to walked over his field, it was like reliving our childhood days all over again.

On my 50th the lads made a bar and we all dressed up in posh dresses and tiaras, the fellas wore white shirts and Dickie bow
s, we had cocktails and the 'room', (two gazebo's joined together lol) was decorated and lit with candelabras. They had gone to this trouble as a surprise even putting on a buffet, it is a birthday I shall never forget, thank you all.

Sometimes the lads can't stand the pa
ce especially after some of their real ale and whisky tasting sessions and we love nothing more than capturing this on camera.

This was our first meet in 04, we had a trip to Ashbourne. We also did a long walk from the site accross the fields, over Thorpe Cloud to Dovedale. I say 'long' because true to form we took the wrong route, it also involved a stop off at a hotel for refreshment.

We had a trip to Bakewell and a farmers Market. On Sunday we went walking through Lathkildale before lunch.

Aug 04, Thorntons Holt, Stragglethorpe, Radcliffe on Trent, Notts.

Again in this post i have featured meets where there have been six or more of us.
Click on pics to enlarge

April/May 06 Skegness water leisure park, Skegness, Lincs

This meet was very memorable for me, it was my 'saga' birthday and unbeknown to me there was a surprise in store by way of a cocktail evening. Martin had vowed he would never go to the east coast but he made an exception for this extended weekend.

Though Alan had tried in secret to get some suitable clothes for me to wear, through one thing and another I found out about them so I knew something was going to happen. In the afternoon I was whisked off by Alan, Peg and Bo to walk the dogs and on my return was ordered to get into my 'cocktail clothes' together with tiara, (the clothes made me look more like 70, queen mum springs to mind, but ah well in for a penny as they say.)

I was then ushered to the 'cocktail lounge' (a couple of gazebo's joined together,) with sides on I might add, where there awaited a bar that the lads had made, a buffet that the gals had laid on and all of them dressed up to the nines.
There were balloons and even candelabras, the cocktails were weird and wonderful and a good time was had by all.

May 06 Newhall Farm, Soutwell, Notts.

On this meet we went walking, in the evening I remember we congregated for drinks in the summer house type of building that the farmer had put there as a look out for bird watching, we got the impression from his frosty reception the next day that he wasn't very thrilled that we had changed it's use.

July 06 Rutland Caravan and camping park, Greetham, Rutland.

Again we went walking, and then lunch on Sunday.

Aug 06 Steam Rally, Lincs Showground.

This weekend we celebrated Jans 'saga' birthday, we all dressed up as cowboys and Indian's had a mass bar b que. The weather was really kind to us and a good time was had by all at the Rally.

Oct 06 Houghton mill, St Ives, Cambs.

Saturday was spent walking into St Ives, Sunday saw another conker tournament, this time Alan was the champion.

Nov 06 Tallington lakes, Stamford Lincs.

Amongst other activities this weekend featured Peg and myself on karaoke in the club house.

April 07 Mooredge farm, Tansley Derby's.

This was an extended Easter weekend, it was unusually warm and we spent some of it walking. It was only a small site but it had a swimming pool, we went in a couple of times and it was excellent because had it to ourselves. For us it was sad because it was the start of Holly's decline, her cancer had returned and she wasn't able to go walking as she had in the past.

April 07 Oaklea, Woodhall Spa, Lincs.

It was very warm again this weekend, some went to the aviatio
n museum, we stayed on site with Holly, she was happy just laying soaking up the sun.

May 07 Woodland waters, Ancaster, Lincs.

This was the first meet of this year where everyone was there, some went to visit Belton house and some went to the Bubble car museum, we did a couple of walks too.

June 07 Cosgrove, Northants.

Again it was very hot, we went to the canal museum, but for us most of the time was spent with Holly and Lucy.

June 07 Clumber Park, Notts.

We went here especially for the country fair we had to dodge the showers which were heavy at times so after all the nice weather we had been having it was a shame.
Holly's cancer was very rampant by this time, although she could still go for short walks we could see her lesions were getting her down, sadly we knew this was going to be her last outing.

Aug 07 Newhaven, Derby's.

We took our bikes her and on Saturday rode along the Tissington trail to Ashbourne, 11 miles each way and a diversion to a beer festival I reckon we did about 26 miles, there were some sore butts that day but it was really enjoyable.
We had bought a trailer for Lucy to go on the back of Al's bike, she really thought she was top dog.

Sept 07 Smeetons Lakes, Newark, Notts.

On Saturday we went in to Newark then on Sunday did a bit of bird watching with Tosh and Dawn.

Oct 07 The Dirty Duck, Woolsthorpe, Lincs.

The weather was really nice here for the time of year, we walked by the canal and had a meal at the pub on Saturday night.

On sunday we all went for a walk by the canal.

May 08 Lea Cross farm, Shrewsbury.

This was an attractive site with fishing ponds.
On saturday we took the bus in to Shrewsbury and spent the day there with the statutory visit to a local pub. On the sunday it rained quite a bit, we went for a drive and met up with some of the others later at Church Stretton.
Monday it cleared up and we were able to have a walk.

July 08 Windmill Farm, Baston fen.

This weekend turned out to be really warm, We virtually had the site to ourselves. We took a ride into Bourne on Saturday morning but the rest of the time was spent lazing around. The midges were out in force so some of us were suffering for a few days after.

Aug 08 Poolsbrook country park CC site, Chesterfield.
On Saturday we went for a walk and met up with the others in Chesterfield, it was a very wet day.
on Sunday we went walking around the lakes.

Sept 08 Houghton Mill, Cambs.

This was the weekend of the St Ives beer festival, so that was Friday night taken up, there were a few sore heads the next day. When everyone could get going on Saturday morning, we took a pleasant walk into St Ives.

Sunday morning we all went blackberrying.

Though Rea did very well she couldn't walk distances so Dawn took her in a push chair, Sadly it was her last meet with the Sagas.

Oct 08 Dirty Duck, Woolsthorpe b
y Belvior.

We went to Bellton House on Saturday and met up with the others in Grantham, some of them had cycled in along the canal.
After a meal at the pub we had the usual sing song in the evening, it was good because we had the site to ourselves.
On Sunday we went off for a walk.

May 09 Ashcroft farm, Evesham.

This weekend turned out to be very hot and again we found we almost had the site to ourselves.
We started the weekend early on Friday night, building a camp fire and singing and dancing into the early hours.
We walked in to Evesham on Saturday. On Sunday some went for a walk over the fields to a pub but we stayed on site chilling and went off walking later with Lucy and Sammy when it had cooled down.
This was Sammy's first outing with the Sagas.

Aug 09 Hilltop Farm Thrussington, Nr Melton Mowbray.
We spent Saturday morning in Melton and the rest of the time relaxing as the weather was good.
On Sunday we tried out archery, this was done on site and we really enjoyed it, ( NO Sagas were harmed in the process).

Aug 09 Colins Field, Nr Wainfleet, Lincs.

This was a really layed back weekend, the weather was good and it was 'back to basics' much like a hippy camp.
Colin put on a barby on Saturday and a good time was had by all until the wee small hours.

Aug 09 Lincoln Steam Rally.

Sat and Sun were spent around the steam rally, the days were fine but the nights were really cold.

Sept 09 Shelford Nurseries, Nr Nottingham.

Saturday saw us walking over the field to Radcliffe, then catching the bus back to the site, in the evening we caught the bus into Nottingham and did the ghost walk.
On Sunday we walked over the fields to Gunthorpe bridge, managing to get lost on the way and confronted by an angry farmer who promptly directed us to the foot path. Eventually we got there and had something to eat at the pub by the canal before walking back. (along the road).

Winter Wonderland

As we are year round caravanners we never let the weather put us off, it can have some advantages because there are things we see in the winter that maybe we wouldn't any other times.

In December/January 2009/10 we went to Broadway in the Cotswolds we stayed at the caravan club site,
which is just a short walk from the small town. We went walking around Broadway Tower where there was still quite a lot of snow left from just before Christmas, the views were lovely.
Heres an example of something special, whilst we were on site, a little
robin would often come to visit, we were lucky to capture this on camera.

The very cold winter of 2010/11 brought on some real extremes in scenic views, here on the chatsworth estate the aquaduct and waterfall had frozen solid it was like a scene from Narnia, a real winter wonderland. (See my post Derbyshire, Chatsworth xmas New year 2010/11)

W
hen we stayed near Buxton at the caravan club site 'Grin Low', it was Easter but boy did it snow.

This picture shows how we found our awning one morning after heavy snow, Al had to squeeze out of the door, and of course what do you do in an emergency.....................you......... take a picture.

Then ..........you ...........build a snow man.

Whilst in Derbyshire we had a couple of nice walks around the Goyt Valley and reservoir, the views w
ere stunning, for us the snow made it even more magical.

A couple of years ago over New Year we stayed near Cromer, it was cold but it didn't put us off having a walk on the beach, we dared Al to go skinny dipping and after a double dare he took on the challenge.

Lucy loves the snow too............

...and of course she always likes to keep warm.
